ACI Northeast Texas Chapter
January Speaker:
Dr. Tyler Ley Discussing Air Entraining of Concrete
Please join
the Northeast Texas Chapter of ACI for a presentation from Dr. Tyler Ley on
air-entraining of concrete. The
quality control of ready mix air-entrained concrete is widely regarded as the
biggest challenge facing the concrete industry. Dr. Ley will answer some classic air-entrainment questions. Have you ever wondered:
Why are there often
discrepancies between the fresh and hardened air-void test results? Can the ASTM C 231 pressure meter measure the
small air voids produced with certain air entraining agents?
This presentation gives
an overview of the fundamentals of air-entrained concrete and a review of
classic methods to investigate the air-void system in fresh concrete and their
challenges. In addition work will be
presented about several new and innovative techniques being developed at Oklahoma
State University to investigate the fresh air-void system of concrete.
Results from the use of a micro-CT
(micro Computed Tomography) scanner will be presented. This device is similar to a medical CT
scanner and has the ability to look inside of concrete and see the bubble
systems (see pictures above). A new
field measuring technique will also be presented.
Tyler Ley is an Assistant Professor at
Oklahoma State University in the Civil and Environmental Engineering. His primary research area is in concrete
materials with special emphasis on long term durability. Tyler has work experience with the Texas
Department of Transportation with the Bridge Division for 2 1/2 years designing
and dealing with concrete materials and as a construction engineer with Zachry
Construction building roads and bridges in Texas. Please come out for an informative and
exciting presentation, and help NETX ACI welcome Dr. Ley.
Dallas will be hosting the ACI National Convention in Spring
of 2012.
